Brite Eye Newsletter

Issued March 12, 2012 - Implement Briteye Impairment Detection System for training DRE officers.

For DRE training - DRE instructors can use the Briteye™ instrument during DRE training classes to illustrate the behavior of the eyes with various substances. This is especially useful during the alcohol workshop, to demonstrate how volunteers exhibit the eye signs of impairment.

DRE trainees can review their own testing procedures to confirm compliance with IACP standards. For example, when presenting horizontal gaze stimulus, the Briteye system reveals how long they took to move the stimulus from center to maximum deviation. Briteye does this by reporting the time on each frame.

Students can practice testing each other. Students can prepare for certification by reviewing sample videos of impaired individuals and test their own ability to make the determination - ‘impaired’ or ‘sober’.

Instructors can show un-identified videos of known subjects and compare the student’s determination with actual conditions and results. printer friendly create pdf of this news item

February 17, 2012 Burnaby, BC - Early adopters of the Briteye Impairment Detection System have already received their Briteye instruments. Across North America, DREs are finding Briteye can provide clear, close up videos of the eye examination. The first units have been shipped to law enforcement agencies in America's east coast and west coast as well as to the RCMP in Canada.

"These early customers are an important part of our development team." said Harvey Martens, CEO of BriteEye Industries and a co-founder of the startup. "They give us feedback on how they use the Briteye system for training their SFST and DRE officers." he said.

For a limited time, Briteye will continue to distribute free software upgrades to customers who buy these early production systems. "We want every client to get the most from their Briteye instrument. The latest features include a forensic zoom capability that allows anyone with access to the video file to control the close up images with simple mouse commands.

Briteye for DRE evaluations

Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus – (HGN)

Maximum Deviation

- the Briteye instrument will help identify when the suspect’s eyes are at maximum deviation. It does so by showing a close up image of the corner of the eye. At maximum deviation, there will be no ‘white of the eye’ visible on the computer display.

Nystagmus

- the Briteye instrument will help identify whether clear and distinct nystagmus is present at maximum deviation. It does so by showing the direction of gaze in the eye at maximum deviation.

Angle of Onset

- the Briteye instrument will help identify what was the angle of onset when the nystagmus first appeared. It does so by showing the direction of gaze in the eye in every frame of the video. Angle of offset can also be confirmed by examining the video of earlier excursions of the stimulus.
